Wheels for GAZ-66

by: Pavel (Paul) Dotsenko [ PAUL ]

GAZ-66 is one of my favorite trucks. That’s why when I got the Eastern Express kit, I wanted to make it as accurate as possible. Among all of the other mistakes in the kit, the wheels looked very bad and inaccurate. After a lot of thought on whether to scratch build such complex parts – or to buy them, I decided to give the wheels from MIG Production a try.

The wheels were packed in a regular box and a zip-lock bag. The most visible inaccuracy of the Eastern Express wheels was corrected on the after market pieces. On the original model, the wheels looked very flat and the outer rims were very wide and also unrealistically flat. MIG Productions greatly improved the profile of the wheels and added a 3 dimensional effect to them. Looking from the outer side, the wheel and tire combination looks very realistic. However the inside, has some inaccuracies. The rim (which is corrected on the outside) is left untouched and the brakes are left as just flat, round plates.

The last picture is a comparison of the Eastern Express and MIG wheel cut aways.

Ideally, I would like to see an improved and corrected inside of wheels, including rims and brakes. Also, the front wheels need what I call “crowns” around the hubs. These “crowns” are actually used as steps for an easier access to the cab.

The quality of the pieces is very good. There was no flash, except inside some holes on the excellent spare tire. I didn’t find any air bubbles anywhere on the tires. The runners are very well made, in such a manner that during the removal of the pieces, most of the tire pattern is saved.

These wheels will greatly improve the overall look of the model. I recommend them to anyone making the Scale, Eastern Express, or Revell models.
